Stringfellow Transit Center

Fairfax, VA

The LEED Silver Certified Stringfellow Road Park and Ride project consisted of a 1,400 sf building sitting on an approximately 25 acre site. The goal of the project was to expand the parking capacity, and provide a ticketing/information office area for bus commuters with secure and non-secure bike parking. A challenge faced with this project was designing a building with visual presence given the relatively small square footage of the building to the larger site. To solve this problem, the building was conceived as a free-standing canopy that unified the enclosed and unenclosed functions below. It was designed to be floating above those spaces, and along with the concrete paving, blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior. An asymmetrical “butterfly” roof was chosen as an expression of “welcome”, not just one of “shelter”.
